Aloha in an envelope

Dear P-man,

Hand-written letters are very rare nowadays, but delicious to receive. You can keep a letter and read it again and again.

Before going out to class today, I actually managed a glance at the mail table, saw a pretty white envelope with my name on it :) Expecting it to be someone else, I ripped the envelope right away as I made my way to the metro station. To my delightful surprise, it was from you!!

I'm a simple girl with simple needs (sometimes la) and such things make me smile from ear to ear. Really! I was!

However, wedged beneath my allegro was a feeling of melancholy because after whats it? 3 years? I have only met you once. Don't fret P-man, I have a feeling that one day the time will come :) By the way, your penmanship is not a sheer malevolence upon the eyes. I dare admit that mine is more deserving of such beef.

Thank you for taking the time to appreciate friendship. Thank you for extending your trust to me despite the distance and the lack of correspondence. Thank you for being so selfless and understanding - I remember the days when I used to curl up on the bathroom floor bawling my eyes out with you going "its okay, cry it out" on the other side of the phone. Also THANK YOU for likening me to 'a ray of sunshine through a dark, overcast sky'. Who else will but you! I wish you all the luck in the world and hopefully Uni life will be breezy as it was in Uplands. I may not possess the talent to artfully play with my words quite like you, but you get my point right? :)

A letter that is written in e-mail suggests speed and disinterest. It says that it was written to save time, because it would be too late to send a snail mail and because the person sending it couldn't take the time to sit down and spend quality effort on writing an actual letter. E-mail is alright for a quick line or two, for work and for ordering online but it does not lend itself to personal letters.

(But I'm not totally against it either, otherwise no one will email me :( :( :(  boohoo)

We should all practice traditional communique once in a while. Get a beautiful pen, one that uses real ink and write a letter today. It does not matter whether you are a good writer or not. Your letter will make someone’s day. Letters can say so very much, they can say “thank-you”, “Hey!”, “I’m sorry, please forgive me”, “I’m missing you”, or “I just thought I would say Hello”.  Letters are a joy to receive and a treasure that can last for centuries.
